Motzblock, an Earth Retainer Block, Patent No. 5,325,643

Retainer Blocks Description
Suspended foundations (and carton form systems) have a space between sub-grade and the supporting structure. This space must be maintained in order to keep existing expansive soils from overwhelming the foundation and causing foundation failure.

Concrete Blocks
The traditional method of accomplishing this goal has been to line the perimeter of a building's crawl space with pre-cast concrete blocks prior to backfilling the exterior. Concrete blocks get the job done, but are very heavy and cumbersome to install.

Motzblocks
Motzblocks are specifically designed to eliminate problems associated with traditional concrete block soil retainers. Motzblocks are a better choice for a soil retainer because it is comparable in strength to concrete blocks, it is light weight, self sealing and safer to install than concrete blocks. It can also be mechanically attached to the structure to reduce the risk of the blocks slipping down the face of the beam and falling down under the building.

Composition
Manufactured from pre-consumer recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE), Motzblocks are molded into panels weighing 1.5 to 5.0 pounds each, depending on the size. The Motzblock's lightweight design eliminates the need for expensive placement machinery required by traditional concrete soil retainers.

Cost
With material cost comparable to that of pre-cast concrete retainer blocks, the Motzblock can be installed at a fraction of the labor and equipment cost of traditional concrete blocks. In addition to the cost savings, the time it takes to install Motzblock retainer blocks is cut in half and the risk of lifting injuries is greatly reduced. Alterations for pipe penetrations or corner conditions are accomplished simply with a utility knife.

Shipping and Storage
The Motzblocks compact and nestle into stacks for easy shipping and storage. Architects and engineers prefer Motzblocks due to their superior strength when compared with traditional methods.
